From what I've read it is for its 30th Anniversary so we're looking at sometime in 2017.

I said it 10 years ago, I'll say it again: A Final Fantasy VII Remake will mark the beginning of the end for Square.
It's all downhill from here...

SquareEnix has been on a downward spiral for many years now. profits are no where near projected goals on any of their IPs.
yet they are still making/distributing hitman games, deux ex games, tomb raider games etc.
i miss the old square. tbh i wish they would remake/redo/finish the xenogears/xenosaga games instead of FF7. but i did enjoy ff7 years ago.

If the final games for the Final Fantasy series are just remakes of successful Final Fantasies I will be happy because the worst they can do is make a game with terrible graphics look visually more appealing even if they somehow screw up the stories.
But the end for Square? Not really Square Enix is making a lot of good games lately if you look outside of Final Fantasy. Final fantasy is probably the only game made by square as of late that has been really bad.
Disgaea, Hitman, Tomb Raider, Dragon Quest, SaGa, Kingdom Hearts, Star Ocean, Just Cause, Bravely Default/Second.
Square Enix is in no means doing bad.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake
most of the games you listed aren't made by square enix. they published them while another studio was the actual dev.
all the old companies aren't holding up well. they basically struggle even as a publisher. the mobile market has taken its toll on the big companies of yesteryear. it's sad but true.
capcom, konami, square enix, tecmo, etc.
other big firms are firing whole teams or downsizing from 200++ personnel to ~20 personnel TOPS. times have changed.
i always felt that the mobile market would oversaturate the videogame market and cause a crash like back in 83. but it seems to be taking over. interesting trend, especially since big companies like konami are only focusing on mobile games now.
tl;dc (too long didnt care) ...
i still want a xenogears remake/remaster/continuation.

Well said. But was Square ever involve in Disgaea? All of the games from Square are looking good so far.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake
Interesting how many ideas spawned so quickly from one anti-FF7 fanboy throwing his opinion into the mix. (I'm referring to myself, just in case someone doesn't get that)
I honestly laughed out loud when I read the title "Disgaea" in that post. I HATE grinding games, yet Disgaea has managed to impress me at every turn. Too bad it's from Nippon Ichi Software (NIS) and not from Square. (My thanks to krustytoe, who pointed this out already)
As for the mobile takeover... Didn't we all see that coming? Pretty sure that fact is irrelevant when criticizing any consoles games these days. Konami and Capcom both lost my respect a long time ago, and their most recent attempts at profits have left me wondering "Will we ever see another decent game from these companies?"
My honest hope is that I never have to ask that question in regard to Square Enix. I'm one of the few that hated Final Fantasy XIII but loved both XIII-2 and LR:FFXIII. Loved 12, though I hated the combat system, for the most part.
Recent titles outside of Final Fantasy that have come from Square typically don't appeal to me. Kingdom Hearts was a bad example, in my opinion, because the story is what gets me most - And Kingdom Hearts stole it's story from countless other titles (while adding a nice bunch of original story and conforming the original to fit, not all bad, just not something I can respect on it's own) so Kingdom Hearts failed to impress on that front.
And quite possibly the most important thing in this post: Graphics are pointless fluff. Just makes the files bigger and the loading screens longer. Draw distance so amazing that you can enjoy a truly open world with seamless flow from area to area? Nice, don't care. Increase the number of polygons exponentially? Really don't care. Made Laura Croft's breasts one size larger? Oh really? Still don't care.
Graphics mean nothing to me. It's the plot, the gameplay, and most importantly - Originality.
If a game is remade like this, it will undoubtedly follow the same story while conforming to the social expectation. Who here enjoyed the crossdressing scene back in the old PSX game? Honestly, what are a chances of us seeing that again with society and the gaming universe being the way it is? How about the dates? Think they will be as brazen and entertaining as they were nearly 20 years ago? Doubtful! Games reflect upon the age they were designed for - and the current age sucks. This game is a huge mistake, but hey - That's just my personal opinion.
------
My opinions aside, it's nice to see some conversation going on here. Pretty rare for us to have any noticeable activity that doesn't involve someone asking for help while hacking their save, or downright refusing to learn lol. (Yeah, that was me once upon a time.... Sorry about that lol)
EDIT: Oh, and boogersculptor - What I meant when I said it was all downhill from here was simply that up to this point they still had a chance... Maybe a snowball's chance in hell, but a chance. With this announcement... the chance of recovery is 0. Final Fantasy is dead, and with it will go the company that created it. Just my thoughts on the matter, but there they are.

Re: Final Fantasy VII Remake
really interesting topic
all in all i will probably still buy and play this remake but i still miss the old square/enix games. xenogears and valkyrie profile are probably my favourite rpgs of the ps1 era (castlevania symphony of the night is in there as well).
i miss the days of niche gaming. but now its all tappy-tap swipe-swipe waggle. dont get me wrong there has been SOME innovation in regards to mobile games but i fear this mass marketing of gaming will cause a downfall.
but alas, as long as i see gaming for what it is; entertainment, i wont lose my mind over all of this.
"ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!"

Valkyrie Profile was great. But who knows Square might just unveil the next one at TGS. Now that FF7 remake and Shenmue III is begin made. Anything is possible.

You're making me want to try to raise some hype for Level 5 now.. Got me wanting a Dragon Quest VIII remake.. Heck, if I could just get a decent video card I'd play it on PC and try to mod it lol.
Back to Final Fantasy VII for a moment - Think Square will try to reinvent the materia system or do you think they will just keep the old one more or less the same? My vote is keeping it the same, but knowing Square we should already have our answer lol.
What do you guys think?
