PS4 Slim
by wololo
We announced a few weeks ago the news of a new PS4 motherboard, pointing out that this new motherboard was not a big hardware revision such as the PS4 slim. The PS4 launched half a year ago, and people are already wondering if a PS4 slim is in the works from Sony. Given that all their previous consoles have had a “slim” hardware revision in the past 10 years, it is fairly risk free to bet that a PS4 slim will eventually see the light of day.
The question everybody asks however is: when will the PS4 slim be released, what is the PS4 slim launch date?
Looking at the history of the Playstation brand, I think I can pretty much guess when the PS4 slim will relase. Bear with me as I bore you with a bunch of numbers:
The PS2 Launched in March 2000. The PS2 Slim launched 55 months later, in September 2004.
The PSP Launched in December 2004, its slim counterpart was released in September 2007, 34 months later.
The PS3 was released in November 2006, its slim version launched 35 months later, in September 2009
The PS Vita launched (in Japan) in December 2011. The PS Vita slim launched 23 months later, in October 2013
What do I get from this data? First of all, the slimline revision of PlayStation products historically launches in September or October. I’m assuming the date is chosen in a way the matches as good as possible the shopping frenzy of Black Friday, which happens in November.
Secondly, as generations go by, it seems the amount of time between the first version and the slim revision tends to reduce. It was more than 4 years for the PS2, less than 3 years for the PSP and the PS3, and less than 2 years for the Vita.
Now, it’s no mystery that the Vita sales haven’t been doing so great, and it is possible that the Vita slim release was accelerated in order to try and boost the sales of our beloved handheld. But I’m going to make the bet here that we will be looking at a similar schedule for the PS4 slim.

Based on the above, I estimate that the PS4 Slim will be released around October 2015. If not, my second bet, but I think it is much more unlikely, would be September 2016.

Re: PS4 Slim
New PS4 model incoming… but it’s not the PS4 slim yet.
Straight from the intertubes comes the news of a new series of PS4, models CUH-11xxA (the current models are CUH-10xxA).
The US FCC (Federal Communications Commission) just certified the new model yesterday, bringing attention to Sony’s new PS4 to the eyes of the people in the US… but it’s not completely new, as this PS4 hardware revision had been certified in Indonesia two weeks ago (model CUH-1106A).
Today’s model certified by the FCC is CUH-1115A (a peculiar number since the US region code for the PS4 should be 01, not 15). Gaming site Dualshockers investigated the certificates’ documentation, and report that the only main difference seems to be in the Wifi component, in particular the Wifi Antenna.
Code (Suffix) Country
00 Japan
01 North America
02 Australia / New Zealand
03 U.K. / Ireland
04 Europe / Middle East / Africa
05 South Korea
06 Singapore / Malaysia
07 Taiwan
08 Russia / India
09 China
10 ?
11 Mexico
12 Hong Kong
DualShockers say the Planar Inverted-F antenna (PIFA) is being replaced by an Inverted F Antenna (IFA). Google and a few papers on the net tell me PIFA is better than IFA on pretty much every metric, so I’m assuming the decision to change here is driven by cost, not by the quality of the Wifi signal. What I can say, as a user, is that my current PS4′s Wifi is definitely not as good as that of the PS3, so I’m not sure using a worse component is going to help with that… then again if I was a hardware expert I would… oh, well, I’m not so I’ll shut up, but feel free to let me know in the comments what that change could mean in terms of Wi-fi efficiency.
Besides the Wifi component being replaced, there doesn’t seem to be much change in this upcoming PS4 model. A PS4 slim would see a change in the major version number (CUH20-XXA) rather than the minor version, so I wouldn’t expect any major change in the design or functionality of this CUH-11xxA revision.
The PS4 Dev wiki has close to no information on the device yet, but its history tells me I could have written this article 10 days ago.

Re: PS4 Slim
The new wifi component would be less expensive, which means the PS4 would cost less for Sony to make. That’s all.
or is it o.o
